What to Wear to a Winter Wedding as a Guest: The 2026 Guide

The Emeraude, an emerald beaded mermaid gown for a winter wedding guest

A winter wedding is one of the most beautiful invitations of the year. Candlelight, dark afternoons, a hotel fireplace, and a dress code that lets you wear the things summer never allows: velvet, deep colour, long sleeves, beading that catches the light.

It also comes with its own questions. How formal is formal? Can you wear black? What about the cold between the church and the car? This guide answers them one by one.

Start with the invitation

The time of day tells you most of what you need to know. A ceremony at noon followed by a long dinner leans towards a midi or an elegant long dress. An evening ceremony, or anything marked black tie, is the moment for floor length. If the invitation says nothing, a long dress is rarely wrong at a winter wedding: the season itself is formal.

Colours that belong to winter

  • Emerald and forest green look rich in candlelight and stand out beautifully against a white dress in photographs. See The Emeraude, a beaded emerald mermaid gown with a draped sash.
  • Deep red and wine are festive without being loud. See The Rubina in red velvet and The Carmen in wine-red taffeta.
  • Champagne and gold suit an evening reception, as long as the shade is clearly warm and nowhere near ivory. See The Nocturne in metallic champagne.
  • Black is perfectly acceptable at most modern winter weddings, especially in the evening. Lift it with texture: satin, beading or a sculpted shoulder. See The Héloïse.

What to avoid as a guest

  • White, ivory and very pale champagne. The oldest rule still stands: the bride is the only one in white.
  • Anything that competes with the bridal party. Feathers from head to toe and a cathedral train are for New Year's Eve, not for someone else's wedding.
  • A dress you cannot sit in. A winter wedding means a long dinner. Try sitting, walking and dancing in your dress before the day.

Fabrics that work in the cold

Velvet, taffeta, heavy satin and beaded mesh hold their shape and look right in winter light. Long sleeves or an elegant wrap solve the walk from the church to the car; a good coat over a sleeveless gown is just as correct. Leave light chiffon for summer.

When to order

Every NooraNoir dress is made to measure: cut to your own measurements rather than taken off a rail in a standard size. Making a dress takes about 18 days, and it reaches your door in 5 to 6 weeks in total. Shipping is free on orders over €299. If you are unsure about your measurements or a colour, write to us before you order and we will help.

  • For a wedding in December: order by the end of October.
  • For a wedding in January or February: order at least six weeks before the date.

Questions we are often asked

Can I wear black to a winter wedding?

Yes, at most modern weddings, especially in the evening. Choose a black dress with texture or shine so it looks festive rather than sombre.

Is velvet too warm for a wedding?

Not in winter. Churches and old hotels can be cool, and velvet looks its best in candlelight.

Can I order a dress in a different colour?

Yes. We have over a hundred fabrics. Send us a message with the colour you have in mind and we will find it.
